The Understudy
The Understudy in Chicago, designed by Siren Betty Design, is a theatre bookstore and coffee shop that blends European charm with Chicago creativity. Inspired by the warmth of old libraries and cafés, the space layers texture, color, and character to create a welcoming destination for readers, performers, and locals.
Every surface at The Understudy was designed to feel collected over time. Antiques and found treasures from theatres and bookstores are mixed with marble, hand-formed clay tile, and lush greenery that bring history and warmth into balance. The café’s patterned floors and curved custom millwork reflect the elegance of Old World design while remaining grounded in the modern. Owners Adam Crawford and Danny Fender envisioned a place that serves many needs, so the seating includes reupholstered armchairs, a velvet Chesterfield, sunny counters, and cozy banquettes with small metal trays for books and coffee. The result is a space that celebrates individuality, storytelling, and the refined sensibility that defines Siren Betty Design.
